When Does a Load Become "Oversized"?

New Zealand transport regulations define limits on what can travel on public roads without special permits. Once you exceed these, you need permits — and sometimes pilot vehicles or police escorts.

Width Limit
2.5m
Over 2.5m = permit required. Over 3.1m = pilot vehicle required.
Height Limit
4.25m
Over 4.25m = permit required. Bridge and wire clearance assessed per route.
Length Limit
22m
Over 22m combination length = special conditions apply.
Mass Limit
44t GVM
Over standard axle limits = permit and route assessment required.

If your load exceeds any of these dimensions, don't worry — that's what we specialise in. We handle the permit applications, assess the route and arrange pilots.

The Oversized Freight Process

01

Load Assessment

Tell us the dimensions and weight. We confirm whether permits, pilots or police escorts are required and map a viable route.

02

Permit Applications

We apply for all necessary permits through NZTA and liaise with local councils for any special conditions or curfew windows.

03

Pilot Coordination

For loads requiring pilot vehicles, we arrange qualified pilots with the right equipment. Police escorts are arranged when required.

04

Transport & Delivery

Load day — everything is pre-planned. We depart at the permitted window, travel the approved route, deliver safely.

Oversized Freight Questions

Standard NZTA permits typically take 3–5 business days. Complex routes with local council involvement can take up to 10 business days. Give us as much lead time as possible and we'll work to your schedule.

Yes — we coordinate all pilot vehicle requirements. For loads over 3.1m wide, pilot vehicles are required in New Zealand and we arrange qualified operators with the proper equipment and signs.

Some oversized permits are restricted to certain travel windows — typically daylight hours. We'll advise what's permitted for your specific load and route. Weekend travel is possible and sometimes preferred for minimising traffic disruption.

We've transported loads in excess of 5 metres wide. Each oversized move is assessed individually for route viability, permit conditions and safety. Call Austin to discuss your specific load.
